Anglers Monitoring Initiative

The Wharfedale Anglers Monitoring Initiative was formed by the West Yorkshire branch of the Salmon and Trout Association in association with several local angling clubs and associations we work alongside The Riverfly Partnership to support anglers, water conservationists and a wide range of other interested groups and organisations. The Wharfedale Anglers Monitoring Initiative aim is to monitor the biological water quality of the River Wharfe through its aquatic insect populations.As anglers we are ideally positioned to be natural guardians of our river environment, and are in the perfect position to monitor the health of the river we fish. By monitoring the insect life of the river Wharfe over as larger area as possible we hope to lay down a base layer of information regarding the Wharfe’s river invertebrate populations, and so enabling our partners to monitor and identify any population fluctuations and the cause and effect of these population fluctuations. The monitoring initiative will help to protect a wide variety of the river Wharfe's natural wildlife populations as the insect life that inhabits the river is the key to a healthier wider wildlife population. Our monitoring scheme, used in conjunction with routine monitoring by the EA will ensure that water
quality is checked more widely and action taken at the earliest opportunity should any severe disruption be detected. Our monitoring initiative will also act as a deterrent to incidental polluters through the possible use of its data in any future Environment Agency prosecutions. We hope to in time involve local schools and youth groups in our monitoring scheme and hope to use a range of educational tools to develope youngsters understanding of their native dales rivers.
